Facing Fears—How to Transform Your Mess into Success
Fear can be a paralyzing force, holding us back from pursuing our dreams and reaching our true potential. As someone who has faced fear head-on, I want to share my personal journey and offer insights to empower new entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and those looking to make a change in their lives. Embrace your fears, use your gifts and talents, and rise to soar above the challenges. This post is based on Chapter F of my book ZERO LIMITS: Breaking the Boundaries that Hold You Back (available on Amazon).
My Journey Through Fear
A few years ago, I was at a crossroads. Significant upheavals, including the loss of my parents and a painful divorce, marked my life. I found myself alone for the first time, grappling with fear and uncertainty. My career as a nurse, while stable and respected, no longer fueled my passion. I was merely existing, living the life others expected of me.
One night, in a moment of deep despair and vulnerability, I found myself questioning everything. I felt lost and overwhelmed by fear. But it was also a defining moment. I realized I had to change my mindset immediately and face my fears if I wanted to live a fulfilling life. That’s when I decided to leave my nursing career and pursue my passion for photography.
Embracing Fear as a Catalyst for Growth
Facing fear isn't easy, but it is essential for growth. Here are five steps that helped me transform my fear into a powerful motivator:
1. Admit You're Afraid: (That’s the hardest part!)
I had to be honest with myself about my fears. Writing down my fears in a journal helped me confront them head-on. I’m a big proponent of creating “pros” and “cons” lists. I admitted that I was afraid of failing, afraid of the unknown, and afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone.
2. Rethink Your Fear:
Instead of viewing fear as a barrier, I began to see it as an opportunity for growth. I replaced my negative self-talk with affirmations like, "I am capable and will figure this out" and "I am prepared to open my own business." This shift in mindset empowered me to move forward with confidence. (Side note: Chapter “I” is all about “I am” statements.)
3. Pursue What Truly Excites You:
Photography had always been a passion of mine, but I had put it aside for a more "practical" career in nursing. Rediscovering my love for photography reignited a fire within me. I let my passion drive my actions, which made the fear of failure seem less daunting.
4. Prepare Yourself:
Building resilience was key. I prioritized self-care by practicing yoga, meditating, and seeking support from my loved ones. Staying focused on my goals and surrounding myself with supportive people helped me bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward. I had to say goodbye to the naysayers and debbie-downers in order to focus on my own dreams and goals.
5. Take Action:
I started small by taking photography classes and gradually building my portfolio. Each small step built my confidence and reduced my fear. Celebrating these small victories motivated me to take on bigger challenges, like starting my own photography business. I read a lot! I studied a lot! I trained a lot!! I became relentless.

Remember, you have the power within you to rise and soar. Use your gifts and talents to create a life that is fulfilling and impactful.
